What to Choose Between a Proctored and Non-Proctored Test

If you know a little bit how the assessment system in education works, you must be familiar with words proctored as well as non-proctored. The meaning of these words is quite self-explanatory, however, there are multiple aspects attached to them which you should know if you are planning to take an exam anytime soon.

Proctored test

In a proctored test, an examiner is present while the candidate takes the assessment.  There are two ways to administer the test, either on a PC or else using pencil and paper. It depends on the kind of exam you are taking that will decide whether the proctor has to be certified or not.

There are many online courses today that need the students to take the test in an administered environment. This helps the members of the faculty to verify the identities of the students. Furthermore, it assures integrity in the whole assessment system.

proctored assessments are based on an excellent administration format.  Students who take paper, online+ paper or else an offline PC based exam are supposed to take the proctoring exam center. The students who take online exams get the option to choose between selecting a face to face examiner or taking the exam via webcam.

The primary of purpose of making students take a proctored exam is that you can make sure that the answers were given without taking help from other people or applying any supplemental devices such as calculators, course books and so on. It is also beneficial for students as during a proctored exam there is a minimal risk of distraction.

During the past decade, there has been an increase in the number of online programs and courses. Consequently, a great number of exam proctoring services have been introduced as many colleges and universities look for effective ways of catching students who cheat.

Non-proctored tests

Non- proctored tests are not supervised by an invigilator. There are times when candidates take online assessments form home. As a proctor is not required in case of a non-proctored test, the students get to take the exam at their convenience.

Proctoring can turn out to be an expensive affair. For a student, the costs can include price to buy the remote proctor, payment at testing centers, the time and effort to find a recognized proctor and the struggle that goes into coordinating a time slot for the test. That is why many institutes and individuals prefer taking a non-proctored assessment, however, there is always a risk of students taking outside help in a case where there is no one present to administer the test.

Which one to choose?

In a few situations, a non-proctored can be sufficient. For instance, when you are supervising integrity, behavior reliability or personality assessments, it is easier for you to be sure that the answers will be quite definite even if a candidate tries to take help from outside.

On the contrary, in case you are administering a cognitive ability test, you have to be attentive. As the authenticity of the results can be influenced due to outside help. So, in a situation like this, it is better for the students to take the exam in a proctored environment.
